Poster #182: A BIOMIMETIC NANOSPONGE AGAINST PORE-FORMING TOXINS
Student: Ronnie Hongbo Fang
Professor: Liangfang Zhang from the Department of NanoEngineering

Abstract
Many threats to populace health, including bacterial infections in addition to biological weaponry, oft rely on pore-forming toxins for their virulence. Anti-virulence therapy, which targets these toxins, offers a means to detoxify the torso in addition to attenuate the effectiveness of the underlying threat. Existing platforms, including anti-sera, monoclonal antibodies, in addition to molecularly imprinted polymers, convey all been used effectively for this purpose, only they all require customized synthesis schemes for application against each private type of toxin. We convey developed a biomimetic toxin nanosponge targets the activity machinery of pore-forming toxins, in addition to therefore is applicable for the detoxification of a broad array of toxin types without the involve for customized synthesis. The nanosponge is made yesteryear coating carmine blood jail cellphone membranes onto the surface of polymeric nanoparticle cores, in addition to acts yesteryear absorbing membrane-damaging toxins in addition to diverting them away from their intended targets. Using a murine model, it was demonstrated that these nanosponges are able to significantly increase the survival of mice challenged amongst a lethal dose of staphylococcal alpha-hemolysin (α-toxin). This rationally designed, bioinspired platform has the potential to last used every bit a handling against a diversity of diseases that employ pore-forming toxins.

Parts of this move were published final calendar week inwards Nature Nanotechnology. Check out the Jacobs School press loose on related work.
